Contention Ratio

A 50:1 contention ratio is standard for home broadband packages across the UK, with business broadband packages typically 20:1. Home Telecom offers a 20:1 contention ratio for their Broadband Option 1.
What is a contention ratio?
The "contention ratio" is the ratio to which available bandwidth is distributed between users. (The maximum number of other people you will have to share the connection infrastructure with).
If you choose a provider with a 50:1 contention ratio this would mean that the maximum number of people you could be sharing the connection with at anytime is 49 other people. If all 50 people were downloading at the same time then your download speed could drop hugely – especially at peak times.
What does this mean?
With a low contention ratio, more bandwidth will be available to individual users on the network at any time. A contention ratio of 20:1 means a faster, more reliable Broadband, the lower the contention ratio the better the service.
